What is Platelet Rich Plasma - Frankincense Therapy (PRP - F)?
PRP stands for ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’ - it is whole blood that is placed in a centrifuge in order to remove the red blood cells and concentrate the protein-rich platelets. The proteins that blood platelets contain are the ones that directly trigger tissue regeneration and healing when they are released. When the PRP is injected directly into damaged tissue it reverses the damage caused by trauma or overuse. Adding a small amount of pure, sterile Frankincense oil appears to accelerate and strengthen the healing effect.
What does PRP - F treat?
- Degenerative Arthritis in any joint in the body
- Sports/Overuse Injuries - Tendon, Ligament or Muscle Pain anywhere in the body
- Back/Neck Pain from Trauma or Overuse
PRP - F is NOT intended for:
- Nerve Pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Cancer Pain
- Autoimmune Diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc.)
Does PRP - F hurt? Is anesthetic used? How will I feel after the procedure?
The procedure is certainly not pleasurable, but it is tolerable. If you are nervous about injections, we offer nitrous oxide (‘laughing gas’), just like at a dentist’s office. This is what we do: A local anesthetic is injected into the specific area. After the anesthetic takes effect, the PRP-F is injected into the damaged tissue. When the anesthetic wears off several hours later, you will experience soreness that usually is gone within one or two days.
How can I know the injections are accurate?
Most injections are performed using ultrasound guidance so we can see the tip of the
needle and the fluid enter the exact problem area.
How often and how many treatments are needed?
Treatments are given at three to six week intervals. The number of treatments needed
depends on the severity of the condition and how quickly your body heals. Typically, two
treatments are sufficient for moderate conditions and four or five for severe, advanced
cases.
Are the results permanent?
PRP-F turns back the hands of time, but it does not stop the hands of time. After a series
of treatments at three to six week intervals, you may find you desire a ‘tune-up’
treatment six to twelve months later.
Is PRP - F legal? Is this considered an experimental procedure? What will my doctor say if I ask him/her?
Yes, it is legal. PRP is becoming known among more and more doctors. It is considered
experimental, but is recognized as safe. PRP-F is virtually unheard of and most likely,
any doctor you ask will advise you against pursuing it simply due to the fact that they
have never heard of it.
What are the risks of PRP - F?
PRP has been studied and has an excellent safety profile and there are very few risks. PRP-F has not been formally studied, but to date there have been zero adverse effects and very high patient satisfaction. It is important to note that the Young Living Frankincense oil used is not suspended in alcohol - it is pure and sterile. Injecting alcohol destroys tissue such as nerves, but injecting pure Frankincense without alcohol appears to be healing.
Are there any special instructions before and after the procedure?
Yes. Do not take any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for at least one week before and two weeks after the treatment. Baby aspirin and natural medicines are acceptable.
Will PRP - F work if I am overweight?
Excess weight is definitely works against you but does not negate the possibility of a positive outcome. It is worth a try, but it would be better to lose weight and then come to
see us.
What conditions would prevent me from having treatments?
Cancer, pregnancy, autoimmune disease, and severe mental illness/developmental disorders.
